1. Refresh Your Profile

Updating your profile regularly is essential. Making small tweaks to your content or changing your photos will send your profile to the front page of her search results.

Match also lets you select 3 “Topics” to answer, and at 150-words-or-less, those are easy to change up periodically.

Women who viewed your profile are 78% more likely to respond to a message from you, so when she checks you out on Match, send her an icebreaker message. (More on that in Tip #6!)

You also need to change up your primary photo every so often. You never know what will attract her attention, and women make a split second decision about whether or not they are interested based solely on your appearance. If she skipped over your profile by a few months ago, a new photo might catch her eye.

Have a female friend glance over your profile, since it can be hard to be objective when you’re writing about yourself, and more importantly, you might not know which facets of your life are the most attractive to women.

If you’re not getting great results with your current Match profile, consider starting from scratch. You don’t have to invest a ton of time to write a profile that attracts beautiful women. Click here to see how you can do it in 60 minutes or less.

2. Be Specific About Your Interests

Using the checkboxes for specific keywords helps your profile show up in more search results.

match keywords

Skiing, yoga, camping… whatever sports or hobbies you enjoy should be listed. The more interests you have, the better your odds of appearing in her keyword-specific search results.

Match also uses these keywords to make better matches. If being a vegetarian or specific religion is important to you, say so! You don’t want to waste time and energy pursuing a woman online if the relationship is doomed from the beginning, so be upfront about your dealbreakers.

Talking about your hobbies in your profile has an added bonus - specifics make you seem more genuine. According to a study, authenticity appeals to women the most in an online dating profile.

Instead of writing “I enjoy travel” like all those other guys, mention a few of your favorite destinations and why you like them. If you’re into cooking, describe your signature dish, and how you learned to make it in your Italian grandma’s kitchen.

3. Come Up With A Clever First Line

When a woman clicks on your Match profile, her eyes are naturally drawn to the sentence in the top right corner because it’s a small amount of text floating in a lot of white space. Since Match doesn’t use headlines anymore, it defaults to the first line of your profile.

You want it to be intriguing, informative, and creative - something that catches her eye and makes her want to read more:

  • “It only took 12 hours to end up in that Bahamian prison…”
  • “Hope you’ve got a passport…”
  • “When life hands you lemons, squeeze them over some scallops and have everyone over for brunch.”

Check out this article for tips on writing a clever headline that you can use to craft the first sentence of your Match profile.

You’ll want to spend some time on it, because a bad one is glaringly obvious. If you blow this chance to make a good first impression with a boring, uncreative, creepy or offensive line, she’ll be moving on to the next guy.

4. Let Your Profile Tell A Story

If a woman looks at your photos and likes your first line, she’s going to start reading your profile. First she’ll see your bio, then your interests, and finally she’ll see your list of responses to the appearance, lifestyle, and background questionnaire. Read through all of these and make sure they tell a consistent story.

If your bio says you love running, but your exercise frequency is listed as “I don’t exercise regularly”, what is she supposed to believe? If all your photos show you out partying, but your bio says you prefer spending quiet nights in, she’s automatically going to distrust you.

With millions of users on Match, she’s not going to waste her time on a guy whose profile doesn’t jive with his photos. Make sure you paint a clear and consistent image of yourself throughout your entire profile.

5. Know What You Are Looking For

There’s a ton of criteria you can use to refine your search results on Match. Go through the list of options under “Refine Results” to specify what things matter most to you.

The more specific you are, the fewer results you are going to get. This can be a good thing. With thousands of matches, it can be a relief to see the numbers narrow.

If you are passionate about cycling and want your date to share that interest, don’t waste your time messaging women who have never been on a bicycle before. If something matters to you, be honest about it in your search criteria. This will help you find the best women out there for you.

6. Use Copy & Paste Messages

Online dating is a numbers game, and sending more messages increases your odds of getting a reply. In fact, statistics show you’d have to send out a whopping 114 messages in order to be 99% certain of receiving a response.

You could spend hours trying to write a customized message for each woman. But why not send the same perfect message to all of them in mere minutes? You need a go-to, attention catching ice breaker that will work with any woman, no matter what her profile says.

Read this article for tips on how to write the perfect cut and paste message. But here’s how to do it in a nutshell:

  • Be funny and creative; it will make you stand out.
  • Keep it short—this is an introduction, not a love letter.
  • Use good spelling and grammar.
  • Ask a question so it’s easy for her to respond.

Here’s an example of a great cut and paste icebreaker, but you’ll want to modify it slightly for your own use, because originality will win you points every time:

“It looks like you have a good sense of adventure, so tell me this: If someone were to offer you an all-expenses paid trip to anywhere in the world but you had to leave in the next hour, where would you go?”

This is another place those keywords come in handy. If you want to find a woman who’s also into skiing, use the “refine results” to look for women who enjoy that sport. Then send a custom message like this to every woman in your search results:

“I see you enjoy skiing so tell me, would you rather heli-ski freshly open avalanche chutes in the Swiss Alps or get completely off the beaten track on untouched land in Antarctica?”

You can write a custom icebreaker message for any topic that interests you, like yoga, surfing, cooking, or music. Once you’ve got a few messages in your toolbox, you can send them to hundreds of women in a short amount of time.
