Bugenhagen’s decision to become a matchmaker was influenced by her personal experiences. At the age of 30, she had a corporate career and enjoyed her single life but was looking for someone to share it with.   

In her own words, 

“I was successful, had a great career, and living a great life. All that was missing was a special someone to share that with. I knew there had to be a better way to meet people and find someone awesome. I tried a dating service and I thought they were horrible. I always knew I can do it better than them. I decided to quit my corporate job and help singles find love!”

May Hui Bugenhagen began her career in the matchmaking industry in 2009 when she teamed up with Katie Chen to launch Catch Matchmaking, a service based in Los Angeles. 

Bugenhagen and Chen expanded their reach by establishing Two Asian Matchmakers. When the two eventually parted ways, Bugenhagen launched her first solo business venture - Matchmaker May.

Matchmaker May primarily serves singles in California and Colorado. However, under certain circumstances, she is open to working with clients from across the United States.

Bugenhagen's matchmaking business primarily takes on men as paying clients, while women can join her single's database for free. 

Potential clients start the process by filling out an inquiry online, which is then followed by a 45-minute consultation with Matchmaker May. 

During the consultation, Bugenhagen gathers details about your family background, religious beliefs, career, lifestyle choices, and the qualities you're looking for in a partner.

According to Bugenhagen, her matching process is a two-way street and mutual interest plays a vital role. 

While she ensures the potential match aligns with the client's preferences, she also notes that the man must meet about 75-80% of the potential match’s criteria as well.

During her appearance on the Hearts Entwined podcast, Bugenhagen gave some insight into her matchmaking process.

"We have to kind of use our intuition and find out… What are they really looking for? When was their last relationship? Are they ready for a new relationship? Or are they just going through the motions and just trying to get out there?"

Once a potential match is identified, Bugenhagen personally contacts the client, providing details about the suggested match's future goals, passions, and any mutual values. 

According to the website's FAQ page, clients can expect to meet 1 to 2 matches per month and you’ll only be shown suggested matches who have already agreed to go out on a date with you.  

Keep in mind that if you want to see pictures of potential matches you’ll need to choose a package that includes this feature. 

If there's a mutual agreement to meet, Bugenhagen facilitates the exchange of contact information. Depending on your package, she can arrange the date for you.

In an interview with Voyage LA, Bugenhagen mentioned that women can sign up to be part of the singles database at no cost, and she proactively scouts match candidates as well. 

“I’m always on the lookout for amazing Asian women for my successful, accomplished men. I always encourage women to fill out a profile with me.” 

Women approved for the singles database remain active for potential matching until they personally request to be removed. However, it's important to note that signing up to be part of the database does not guarantee you’ll be going on any dates with paying clients.
