The Face Behind Asian Matchmakers: May Hui Bugenhagen

A professional matchmaker for almost 2 decades, May Hui Bugenhagen launched Catch Matchmaking with Katie Chen in Los Angeles after leaving the corporate world.

As Bugenhagen told VoyageLA:

“I hatched the idea of starting my own matchmaking company in 2007 in Los Angeles, working at my kitchen table. When Katie got laid off in 2007, I quickly convinced her to be my business partner.”

As Catch Matchmaking grew, the two added Two Asian Matchmakers as an additional way to help singles. As she explained in the same interview,

“Since we are both Asian, we started getting more and more requests from male clients who wanted to meet Asian women. We slowly developed a niche in the market where we serve men of all ethnicities in LA and all over the US who want to meet Asian women in Los Angeles.”

The key to her success? Taking an active interest in other people’s personal lives. As she shared with Dear Matchmaker,

“The only reason I’m good at my job is because I’m nosy. I just love asking people about their love lives and… how their date went, and what do they talk about? And so all of that stuff led me to what I am today, which is a matchmaker helping the Asian women out there. That’s how I kind of got started.”

Chen and Bugenhagen have since parted ways, with Chen focusing on Catch Matchmaking and Bugenhagen heading up Two Asian Matchmakers. She also launched her own endeavor, Matchmaker May.

These days, May Hui Bugenhagen is now based in Colorado, continuing to work with LA singles as well as taking on clients nationwide and in Asia.

How Two Asian Matchmakers Works

Two Asian Matchmakers primarily works with men as paying clients, typically taking on only 8 to 12 active clients at a time.

On the website, Bugenhagen says she works with “open-minded, successful men” of all ethnicities who are 35 to 65 years old and looking to meet an Asian woman. 

Asian women can join Bugenhagen’s database of 7,200+ singles for free. The majority of women in her database are between 25 and 55 years old.  

Women apply to join the database by filling out the questionnaire on Two Asian Matchmaker’s website. 

The questions range from biographical information to what type of men you’re hoping to meet. You’ll be asked to share your social media handles and upload 3 recent photos.

As a database member, you’ll only be contacted in the event Bugenhagen selects you as a possible match. You’ll receive a profile and photos, and if you’re interested in meeting, your profile will be shared with him. 

When the interest is mutual, the date is arranged.

Bugenhagen actively recruits database candidates, promoting Two Asian Matchmakers via social media, podcasts, etc. She also has no problem striking up a conversation with someone she feels may be a good fit for a client.

As she shared in an interview,

“Whether it’s meeting people in a grocery store, networking at Chamber of Commerce meetings, having fun at women’s groups, checking out art galleries, organizing meetups, or promoting singles events, I always loved chit-chatting with strangers. It’s kind of like my superpower… the ability to talk to anyone, anyplace, and about anything.” 

Men who are interested in hiring Two Asian Matchmakers can fill out an inquiry form online, or call directly. 

The first step is a complimentary 45-minute phone call to discuss what you’re looking for in a partner, your relationship goals, lifestyle, etc. Bugenhagen will also share the membership levels and pricing (more on that coming up!)

If both of you agree the service is a good fit, you’ll have a photo session with the in-house photographer that will be used to create your profile.

That profile is then shown to potential matches. When a woman is interested in meeting you, you’ll receive her profile to see if the interest is mutual. 

When it is, Bugenhagen arranges the date for you. She encourages clients to call or text their match a day or two beforehand to confirm the date and say hello. 

After each introduction, you’ll both have the opportunity to provide feedback Bugenhagen can then use to refine the search.
