From Casting Director to Matchmaker: Meet Cristina Morara

Cristina Morara wore many hats prior to kickstarting her matchmaking career – she was a casting director, producer, and magazine editor. 

But she says she’s been fascinated by love from an early age, particularly in how people go about finding it.

“I’ve always been interested in romance and finding ‘the one’. I remember being 16 and wondering how you knew when you met your perfect romantic partner. As a former casting director, I was always into the challenge of being on the hunt and finding the perfect person.” 

She made the leap into professional matchmaking after opening a wine bar with her husband, Andrea Morara. The duo noticed how many of their attractive single customers were having difficulty finding someone special, and recognized the business opportunity.

As she told Voyage LA:

“Our upscale clientele began ordering off the menu; ‘Does your husband have any single friends?’ or ‘I’m bringing in someone special tonight - pour the Brunello if you think she’s a keeper or give her the Chianti if she’s not.’ Requests became intimate, so we leaned in and wanted to help. That’s how we came up with the idea for Stellar Hitch Private Matchmaking.” 

The idea came to life in 2009, when the pair officially launched Stellar Hitch in Sarasota. Three years later, they expanded to Los Angeles.

What To Expect As A Stellar Hitch Client

Matchmaker Cristina Morara describes her clientele as upscale professionals who don’t have time to go on a million first dates, so they’re looking for highly curated matches. 

They work with singles in the LA Metropolitan area and Southwest Florida, but they also have a presence in Milan, London, and NY. 

As Cristina said in an interview:

“Clients are looking for partners abroad. Maybe they have more than one home or are traveling internationally. So I’m working with London clients, and breaking into the Italian market as well.” 

Stellar Hitch takes a “quality over quantity” approach to matchmaking, with an emphasis placed on getting to know each client individually and determining what they need to have a successful relationship. 

A “boutique” matchmaking service, the Moraras only work with a set number of clients at any given time. 

Clients can be matched with other clients or with people in Stellar Hitch’s network of contacts. 

While they have scouts that will approach attractive, interesting singles to see if they want to be added to Stellar Hitch’s database, Cristina Morara says most of Stellar Hitch’s database was built from word-of-mouth and referrals. 

In addition to matchmaking, Stellar Hitch offers image consulting and dating coaching. 

Andrea Morara uses his background in design to give clients a “Stellar Personal Brand Review”, which includes a wardrobe critique and advice for creating a signature style. 

Cristina will work with male clients to give them a “female perspective” on what women are looking for, while Andrea coaches female clients on what men really want. 

Both of these services are offered before a date is scheduled, so that each client has the best possible experience during their introductions. 

In her words:

“We give daters the tools to recognize how they’re coming across, and how prepared they are for a first date. Preparation is half the battle. That motto became our touchstone. Let’s prepare our clients, squeeze out the limiting beliefs, and get them to meet the right person.”

They often hand out first date tips to clients, for instance advising them to take things slow and not reveal everything about themselves upfront. As she explained in an interview,

“You don’t need to tell them about your bankruptcy from 10 years ago or your bunion surgery. I remind people, you’re still a stranger. Go slow, steady and respect the process…” 

She also suggests distilling the essential traits you need in order for a relationship to work: 

“Decide on what is absolutely essential in a partner. What are the top 5 fundamental requirements you need in your partner in order to feel happy and healthy in your relationship?”
